Scammer Success!

I’ve been seeing a lot in the news about the amazing success of scammers. Just this AM I saw where they had stolen $1.3 billion in 2023 pretending to be from the government or tech support. HERE is the FBI’s full report.


Apparently, with the arrival of AI, scammers can duplicate a voice (as in voicemail announcement using your own voice) with as little as 3 seconds of exposure. (Recently saw one article advising reverting your voice mail announcement to the default.)


What this means is we have to double down on our efforts to protect ourselves and our loved ones. You get an email or text from the government that you weren’t expecting? Trash it. They will ALWAYS contact you via letter. Heard a loved one’s call for financial help? Hang up and call them back on the number you have for them on record (to make sure its really them calling). (Similar to calling the credit card company only using the number on the back of the credit card.)
