Switching from cable internet to fiber internet
The SCOV tech club will be offing a class on “Your Home Network and the possible Move to Fiber”
Class considerations
Switching from cable internet to fiber internet usually can provide symmetrical upload and download speeds, lower latency, and greater reliability because it uses pulses of light through glass strands rather than electrical signals through copper coaxial cables. The class will cover many of these topics with consideration of the following:
Main Benefits of Fiber Internet
• Symmetrical Speeds: Cable internet typically offers fast download speeds but very slow upload speeds. Fiber provides equal upload and download speeds (often 1 Gbps to 2 Gbps or higher), which is essential for video conferencing, live streaming, and large cloud backups.
• Lower Latency: Fiber dramatically reduces lag (the delay before data transfers), making it ideal for online gaming, real-time voice or video calls, and responsive smart-home devices.
• Immunity to Interference: Because fiber-optic cables do not carry electricity, they are completely immune to electromagnetic interference, power surges, and weather-related signal degradation that can plague copper wires.
• Possible Fewer Fees and Contracts requirements: Many Fiber plans often feature fewer hidden data caps, lower prices per megabit, and simpler equipment requirements (using an Optical Network Terminal instead of a costly rented cable modem).
Things to Keep in Mind
• Availability: Fiber is still rolling out and may not be accessible in every neighborhood. The date for Ripple Fiber viability has not yet been announced.
• Equipment Needs: To get the full benefit of multi-gigabit speeds, you may need to upgrade your home equipment such as a router to a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E/7 model unless that equipment is supplied via the service provider.
