Scareware Tips
Computer Safety Checklist
Keep this near your computer. If a scary screen appears, follow these steps.
1. STOP: Don’t Panic
Is the screen flashing or making a loud noise? It is a trick. Your computer is not actually broken; the website is just trying to scare you.
Do not call any phone numbers shown on the screen.
Do not click anywhere on the pop-up (not even the “X”).
2. DISCONNECT: Break the Link
Close the Browser: Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete (Windows) or Command + Option + Escape (Mac) and select your internet browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari) to “End Task” or “Force Quit.”
Still stuck? Turn off your computer by holding the physical power button down for 10 seconds until it goes black.
Unplug: If you are worried, simply unplug the internet router or turn off the Wi-Fi.
3. PROTECT: Never Give Access
No Remote Access: Never download “AnyDesk,” “TeamViewer,” or “Zoho” because a stranger on the phone told you to. This gives them control of your mouse.
No Payments: Microsoft and Apple will never ask to be paid in:
Gift Cards (Target, Apple, etc.)
Bitcoin or Cryptocurrency
Wire Transfers or Zelle
Hang Up: If someone calls saying they are from “Microsoft Support” or “The Bank Fraud Department,” hang up and call the official number on the back of your bank card instead.
4. VERIFY: Get a Second Opinion
Before you move any money or share any passwords, call a trusted family member or friend.
Remember: If it feels urgent, it is likely a scam.
Pro-Tip for You: If you are setting this up for a relative, you might also want to install a reputable ad-blocker (like uBlock Origin) on their browser. This prevents about 90% of these “scareware” pop-ups from ever appearing in the first place.
