Artificial Intelligence Update 09/28/2026

The past couple of months have been particularly intense…what with all the changes to available models, the arrival on the scene of Chinese models just about as capable as US frontier machines and the debacle that is/was Huggy Face.

First of all – new machines. If you have the interest (and stamina) assign your favorite Artificial Intelligence the job of keeping you up to date. It is truly a daunting task best accomplished by a machine. My favorite (Perplexity) is assigned the job of updating me, each morning over breakfast, on all the latest changes in Artificial Intelligence.

But – let’s talk about China. They have been aggressively developing their machines (just like us) but have imposed a structured control system that promises to become a global default framework for controlling these machines. We are far behind!

That which is receiving the most press (and hand wringing) has been the Huggy Face mess. In a nutshell, machines under development by Open Artificial Intelligence and supposedly in what is called a “sand box” escaped the controls imposed by the sandbox and went rogue. Some 1200 separate machines eventually became involved. The rogue effort targeted an internet portal focused on providing access to Artificial Intelligence for download and further development called Huggy Face.

Since then there has been much hand wringing and some progress. But, due to the decentarlized nature of our economy, direct government controls have not yet appeared. Most hope resides with the individual companies developing Artificial Intelligence for guardrail development and management.

For everyday people, the most practical message is simple: use AI as a helpful tool, but do not give it unnecessary access to passwords, bank accounts, medical information, or other private records. Keep important decisions—especially involving money, health, safety, or personal information—in human hands.
